American Troops and the Bolsheviks

___________________________________________________

In the last entry I've posted from George's diary we see an interesting phenomenon. He expresses some sympathy with the Bolsheviks. George was not alone in his sympathy. According to Russian Sideshow it was not uncommon for the Americans to sympathize with the peasants who were being terrorized by the Russians and the Cossacks. The Communists, of course, mined the peasant class for recruits as the anti-communists forces were well aware. Robert Willett, the author of Russian Sideshow shares this anecdote from American General Graves after a young officer wen on an expedition to investigate the execution of a number of peasant men. According to Graves (via Willett),

I always remember the remark this officer made to me after I had questioned him. His remark was, 'General, for God's sake, never send me on an expedition like this. I came within an ace of pulling off my uniform, joining these poor people, and helping them as best I could.
